Day of Silence

Day of Silence

The National Day of Silence is an event held nationwide on 25 April in order to bring awareness to the discrimination against LGBT students and their allies in schools across the nation. This year’s event is held in honour of the memory of Lawrence King, an eighth grader that was shot and killed 12 Feb. because of his sexual orientation and gender expression.

The Day of Silence’s purpose is to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment and effective responses.

I will be taking this vow of silence to bring notice to the plight faced by many of my fellow LGBT students. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending that silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you’re not hearing Friday.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO BREAK THE SILENCE??
